Since November 2016, an electronic authorisation must be obtained before any air travel to Canada. Similar to theAmerican ESTA, this authorisation is called AVE (French version of " Electronic Travel Authorization"). It only involves arrival by air, including transit. There is no need to print it out in advance: verification that it has been obtained is done by comparing the passport number.

The advantages of the AVE for Canada
Obtaining the AVE Canada
within 72 hours for urgent departures
- AVE valid for up to 5 years
- Multiple stays up to 180 days
- 100% onlineprocess
- Official document from the authorities

If your AVE is granted, it establishes that you are eligible to travel, but does not establish that you are eligible to enter Canada under the Visa Waiver Program. When you arrive in Canada, you will be interviewed by a border protection officer at a port of entry who may determine whether you are inadmissible under the Visa Waiver Program or for any reason under Canadian law.
Leaving Canada to enter the USA and then returning to Canada does not reset the 180-day stay period. You must travel with the passport registered on the EVP. In the event of a refusal, we will refund the full fee, including consular fees.
It does not allow you to find work, settle in Canada to live, or any other activity that Canadian immigration would find improper. It allows you to travel to Canada for visa exemption, if your situation allows it.
